Before I discovered my wheat allergy, I'd been inspired by a show in which someone went to visit different restaurants in NY, trying their dumplings and showing how they were made. (For all I can recall, this might have even been an episode of Reading Rainbow, but more likely it was on H&G Channel). I made the decision that one day, for a special occasion, I would take a group of friends on a Dumplings Around the World tour, hopping from one restaurant (and culture's cuisine) to the next, ordering the dumplings from each one, and moving on: jiaozi, gyoza, pierogi, ravioli, kreplach, dim sum's shrimp dumplings, etc. I was going to plan everything out, call the restaurants ahead of time to set it up, and try to find enough of them near one another we wouldn't have to travel far (maybe even within walking distance). I'm clearly not the only one who likes having all my dumplings in one place. New York City holds an annual dumpling festival:

Of course, that dream is dead. If I want different types of dumplings, I'd have to make them myself, and they won't be the same. I've found one frozen version of gf pot stickers that comes very close, but certain gf doughs just don't steam/bake/pan sear the same way as their wheat counterparts. And I LOVE dumplings. All kinds. And handheld savory pies*. It makes me sad.

*There's a fine line between certain types of dumplings and handheld savory pies. Just consider some of these examples and their dumpling similarities: empanadas, samosas, sambusas, pasties, sfihas, etc.

What kind of potstickers? This is something I definitely miss since going GF in 2001!

The brand we buy is "Feel Good Foods" (don't worry, eat happy), which we purchase at PCC. They have both chicken dumplings and vegetable ones, though I haven't checked the ingredients on the latter to see if they're vegan, all of their products are guaranteed gluten free (and their chicken is antibiotic and hormone free).

Even the dipping sauce that comes in the box of 8 dumplings is quite good; I just heat some water, and pour it over the pouch of sauce in a bowl to warm it up while the potstickers are cooking in the pan, and if I want it spicier, add a touch of sriracha. It's a bit tricky to get the texture of the pot stickers just right, but they're quite tasty.

Samosas? Or some other type of dumpling I've not encountered?

West Indian as in West Indies! D'oh!

I was thinking of the little I know of the difference between northern and southern Indian cuisine, and . . . well . . . d'oh?

Thanks for the link. I'm actually even more intrigued by the curried goat. I have a love of eating goat, but if I'm a satyr, does that make me a cannibal?

Makes me think of this song (http://music.sjtucker.com/track/taglio) inspired by these books (http://www.orphanstales.com/)

I love Sooj's music, both solo and with Tricky Pixie, Kitten Sundae, and other small, local bands in which she weaves her magic. If not for her music, I'd not have discovered Catherynne M. Valente's work, at least not when I did, and the two compliment one another so beautifully, I hear Sooj's music when reading Valente's books and recall scenes from the books when listening to the music. From what I understand, Tucker and Valente are old friends, so it stands to reason their art would play well with one another.
