Since I first attended the HIV/AIDS in Africa class this Tuesday (a week after school began), I am in a mad dash to try to complete as much of the reading for it and for my other classes as I can. The fact that I'm supposed to read an entire book (354 pages, plus intro) by tomorrow as well as a dozen supplemental readings while also trying to read two very long pieces on laws related to Native Americans, it may make sense why I got on a very high soapbox when I received an email from the Democrats asking me to insist President Obama do away with abstinence-only education and support comprehensive sex education instead. This was my grand note at the end of the form letter:

Mr. Obama, we, the citizens of the United States have put a great deal of trust in you. We believe that you have been forthright with us in ways other politicians are not. We believe that you will do what is in your power to overturn the atrocities of the Bush administration, and to help us re-engage as citizens. In your inaugural address, you spoke of responsibility. Not just your own responsibility as president, but that of every citizen to this country. Part of that resposibility is educating our youth well to help prepare them for their future paths, so that they too can become responsible citizens making informed choices. Sexual health is one area that we cannot fail our youth; when they grow to make choices in their intimate lives, let us make sure they are armed with the knowledge to protect them from disease, unwanted pregnancy, and hurt. Let us make certain that when they make the choice to engage in sexual activity, they are doing so with the utmost safety so that they will protect themselves and others, and thus keep the nation healthier and better prepared to meet the challenges of each day. Thank you and be well.

Yeah. I may have gotten a bit carried away. If you like that, you should see the notes I've been writing for my response to the Native American readings. Today's notes include many swear words. Especially my favorite: "fuck." Yea gods, I'm experiencing an overwhelming sense of righteousness and moral outrage disproportionate to my surroundings.

EDIT: And then I get an automated email letting me know that yeah, I'm not even needed: "As the 20177th person to sign this petition, you are helping us reach our goal of 20000 signatures." I'm just another signature on a petition that doesn't need anymore to be recognized.

Yes, they got their signatures. Maybe the extras will add weight to the petition when it comes time to hand it in. So yay for the battle, boo for me! ;)
