Bar-Bee-Que
Mar. 28th, 2009 08:00 pmNom.
We passed a George Foreman electric grill in Costco priced around $60. We considered buying it, but didn't.
When we got home, I had every intention of roasting chicken breasts or making chicken cacciatore. But then Craig asked me what I wanted for dinner, I said, "barbeque chicken." He suggested I make some, and I pointed out we didn't have any sauce. "Why don't you make some sauce?" "With what," I asked, having never made it. "With ketchup!"
Well, we didn't make it with ketchup, but we just made a mean bbq sauce. Nom nom.
I read a few different recipes on the subject before proceeding (and throwing out almost all the directions from each of them). We made ours using:
olive oil - lotta
white vinegar (I would have used apple cider vinegar, but we're out) - little bit
lime juice - little bit
liquid smoke - lotta
tomato paste - 1 can
molasses - lotta
maple syrup (teeny bit, in lieu of the brown sugar we don't have) - little bit
worcestershire sauce - little bit
salt - little bit
cayenne - little bit
garlic powder - little bit
I'm not giving portions, since it was all a "drizzle of this" and a "lot of that" until we came to the right flavor. It turned out we needed a lot of molasses to counter the drizzle of vinegar and the two short squirts of lime. It was far too acidic until we mixed said molasses and then give it another pinch of salt. Now it's perfect.
The chicken calls, the sauce awaits ... we'll have crinkle fries, broccoli, and chocolate cake with it. Nom nom nom.

Decoratin' and Updatin' the House
Mar. 28th, 2009 08:16 pmOh yeah, and recently I got a heads up from
threegoldfish about a short-term poster sale at Zazzle.com, so now these twisted chilies are in the relationship corner of my bedroom, this pegasus by threegoldfish is in Ana's room, I'm still looking for a place for the blue angel (also by threegoldfish) in my room--I'm thinking over my dresser, and then there's this fabulous absinthe print awaiting to be placed in the kitchen.
I wouldn't have been able to afford it had I not gone for the smaller sizes and had the special sale, but I'm glad I did. They're helping fill up some gaps on the wall that looked sad and bare, and I got to support a friend (a little tiny bit) by doing so. La!
We also just had a plumber in on Friday, the same day I got my sense of smell back. He kept showing me all the problems where corrosion has worn away various pieces of the disposal and piping under the kitchen sink, which is just above the mold-ridden (did I mention I'm allergic to mold?), rotted cabinet. Once the mold dries, we'll look to have the cabinet repaired,
jodawi maybe? And then eventually replace the toilets that don't want to flush without a lot of encouragement.
Ana and I haven't worked in the garden since Tuesday, and I'm frustrated. Not only have I not finished chopping away at the rhoddies in the back (kept getting distracted by blackberry vines and nests in the way), we haven't even begun to get the one on the side of the house. There's still a multitude of unwanted blackberry vines, maple saplings, tree prunings, and kiwi vine clearings that need to happen before we can consider clearing the raised beds and the brick circle bed for planting. I suppose we'll still need to get some of the seeds started in the next few weeks in the mini pots I bought.
And did I mention that spring quarter starts Monday? Ugh, ugh, ugh. I'm not ready! I don't feel like I've had enough time.
At the very least I did start getting my room in order. I have replaced my defunct, 14 year old stereo with one jodawi gave me that wasn't being used. I put all my books on their respective shelves, and organized various decorations that were falling willy-nilly around the table. There's still more work to be done, primarily with respect to my clothes, but they're always what get in the way of cleaning the room itself. Today I also bought new sheets for my bed (so I can cycle them when they're in the wash or if I just feel like it seasonally), and some extra washcloths since ours are getting old and lost. Oh, and pillows. Craig bought me a pack of gardening gloves from Costco and a sheep's skin for my bed. Joie. We passed up the "cart" for gardening that looks like a humvee in comparison to a little red wagon. Its sides unhook to dump out one's load or to take them all off entirely and haul it around as a flat.
Tonight I intend to have Ana help me decorate my comp books for my upcoming classes, and maybe I'll start that jigsaw puzzle I've been promising myself I'd work on.
