Undergrads on the Bread Line.
We still can't get rice at Costco. There's an Indian grocery near by we'll be visiting soon so we can get our burlap sack full of basmati rice. At least, we hope it will be there. Even with Craig's salary and help from my budget, we're having to rethink what we eat and how. Legumes, rice, and seasonal veggies may become the norm for us very soon. As it is, my breakfast almost every week day consists of yogurt and granola with nuts, most of the lunches I pack for Ana are some type of hummus on tortilla, some fruit and veg in a sack, and a small carb snack in a sack.
***How are each of you faring as the world's food shortage is really starting to hit the U.S. and other "first world" nations? Please comment below and let me know--how are you and your loved ones holding up? What are you doing to get by (assuming you are)? What are you doing if you're not getting by?***
(First world is a term I've never understood. We're all part of the same planet--third one from the sun in our solar system--calling rich nations "first world" and "third world" just smacks of continued imperialism and a superior/separatist attitude. If someone else is starving and dying of illness in the world, they're the concern of all the world's citizens. Globalization need not be homogenization, it could become, if shaped properly, a form of supporting each other and still respecting the differences of each culture. It could be, but unfortunately, the people in power don't usually see it that way.)
