Unending Fiery Deaths
Jul. 27th, 2009 07:37 pmSo summer hell week has begun in the Seattle area. Our vegetable plants are drying into tiny husks minute by minute. Our cats are performing their interpretation of the Atlanta Zoo Dead Bear Exhibit, and I think I can actually see the water in our glasses evaporate if I stare long enough. Thanks the wonky weather these last several years, our typical late-July/early-August heat wave has been put off, too early, or non-existent. But hey, it's back again! And this time we're not living in Ballard where they'll be having the firemen hose people down at the annual Ballard Fish Festival. We also usually have my dad and step-mom in town with the girls, and we would be eating copious amounts of sushi and hanging out for a few hours in the hotel pool, but they're taking an extended vacation in Japan this summer, so we're left out of the fish-and-watery fun.
Ana went to visit the neighbor girls today, and they put on swimsuits and danced around in sprayed water for an hour before she came back home--already dry again. At present she's upstairs in a cool bath, thinking 9 year old thoughts, while I've spent the majority of the day camped out with the laptop in front of the giant fan wearing not much more than a wrap skirt and bra. Occasionally I've visited the loo for some cuddle time with a wet washcloth.
What's great about summer hell week in the greater Puget Sound area? It's going to be here for at least a WHOLE WEEK! Possibly longer. It's the time of year when my mutters of "now this is why I don't live in [CA/AZ/FL/any other state to the south I've suffered in]" to whimpers of "help me ..." I know, I know, I'm a baby when it comes to extremes in temperature, and Snowpocalypse 2008 was a warning that we would experience an extended heatwave, but dammit, it shouldn't get colder than 40 or hotter than 80 here, except for three days a year on either end when everyone rejoices in three days of snow with snowmen, days off from work/school, and its counterpart heat with overcrowded public swimming pools and water skiing.
I think I'll sweat and flail about some more as I pray for sunset now.
EDIT: There's oen good thing about this week. I won't have any trouble getting Ana to take baths.
